Sochi Olympics, Politics, and Armenia

The Sochi Winter Olympics, which open today, are more so discussed in a political context. The millions of dollars stolen and the presidents of powerful countries boycotting the games often overshadow the purely athletic component.

Armenia's participation can be viewed from this perspective: few in the country know who will represent Armenia in Sochi, but nearly all are informed that Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will be present at the opening ceremony.

Sports analyst Armen Nikoghosyan recalls that Serzh Sargsyan wasn't present 4 years ago in Vancouver — he sees a political context in that as well. As for athletic expectations, in Armenia's case, these are equal to zero.
