Oppositionist Arrested on Suspicion of ‘Aiding’ Yerevan Armed Group

Alek Yenigomshyan, a key member of Founding Parliament anti-government movement, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of aiding the Founding Parliament-affiliated armed group holed up in a Yerevan police station since July 17, Yenigomshyan’s lawyer, Nikolay Baghdasaryan, told the RFE/RL’s Armenian service (Azatutyun.am.)

The oppositionist, along with several other organizers of the daily demonstrations in Yerevan in support of the gunmen calling themselves the “Daredevils of Sasun,” was detained on July 27 ahead of their next rally in Yerevan’s Freedom Square.

Speaking to Azatutyun.am, Yenigomshyan’s lawyer also claimed, without further elaboration, that the arrest was illegal because NSS officers had committed serious procedural violations.
