Number of Deaths Caused by Ceasefire Violations Drastically Increased in 2015: Report

In the period from January-September 2015, 54 soldiers died in 39 incidents registered in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) Defense Army, an increase of 17 deaths compared to the same time frame of 2014, the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office said in a report issued on Friday, October 9.

Based on the findings of a study conducted by the human rights NGO, 31 of the 54 registered deaths occurred due to ceasefire violations, 3 of the deaths were homicides (1 intentional murder; 2 cases of violation of firearm regulations), 5 – suicides or suicide incitements (according to criminal case assessment); 1 death was caused by a violation of combat duty or service rules; 12 deaths were accidents, 2 deaths from health issues and non-proper medical care.

“24 of the 31 deaths caused by ceasefire violations occurred on the territory of NKR, 7 – in Armenia. To compare, in the same time frame of 2014, 17 soldiers died in ceasefire violations in NKR, 3 soldiers – in Armenia. As we can see, the number of deaths from ceasefire violations has increased both in NKR and in Armenia

“Note, the number of deaths caused by ceasefire violations in the period of January-September 2015 exceeds the total number (26) of such deaths recorded in the entire 2014. Compared to 2013, the number of deaths from ceasefire violations has drastically increased over the past 2 years – in 2013 only 10 % of the total military deaths resulted from ceasefire violations, in 2014 – 44.4 %, in 2015 – 59.9 %,” the report stresses.
