Armenian Nature Protection Minister Not Informed About Public Discontent With Gold Mining Project

The Nature Protection Ministry of Armenia has issued a positive environmental expertise opinion on the Amulsar open pit gold mining project taking into consideration the positive opinions of the proper communities, the decisions of the Aldermen's Councils, and the desire of the people, Nature Protection Minister Aramayis Grigoryan said in an interview with EcoLur

“The community presents all environmental problems. All the submitted environmental problems are reviewed by the environmental experts and invited specialists. If they state that no environmental problem will arise, I should, naturally, believe them and trust that's just how it is,” the Minister said.

[Armenia] has an opportunity to develop. It's wrong not to use our resources. We should use our opportunities and not allow private investors and entrepreneurs to act as they please; they must abide the law. When everybody acts in accordance with the law, we will have great successes, Aramayis Grigoryan added.

In reply to EcoLur's remark that the villagers have filed a suit against the Amulsar project, the Minister said he was not informed about that.
