Former Presidential Candidate Seeks Compensation for Assassination Attempt

Union for National Self-Determination party leader, Soviet dissident, and former presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan (pictured) is seeking compensation in the amount of 40 million AMD from Vardan Sedrakyan, Samvel Harutyunyan, and Khachatur Poghosyan, who were convicted for attempting to assassinate the former presidential candidate, said Hayrikyan's attorney Levon Baghdasaryan, in conversation with Epress.am.

Baghdasaryan said that the injured party wanted the matter of compensation to be settled within the scope of the criminal case, but the court, announcing the verdict to sentence the defendants to prison, did not consider the issue of compensation. During the court proceedings, the injured party said that Hayrikyan spent 20 million 500 thousand AMD between March 28 and May 16 for surgery and treatment abroad. He needs an additional 20 million 500 thousand AMD for another operation and subsequent treatment, since, according to the lawsuit, Belgian doctors concluded that Hayrikyan would need a second surgery over the next two years.

On the matter of financial compensation, Hayrikyan's attorney also appealed to the Court of Appeal, but this court too did not consider the issue.

"We availed of the right to launch a civil suit, as we believe the issue of compensation must be settled, regardless of whether it will be [considered] within the scope of the criminal case or separately," said Baghdasaryan.

Vardan Sedrakyan has refused legal assistance in this case and will be defending his interests in court himself.

Recall, Judge Gagik Poghosyan sentenced Sedrakyan (accused of ordering the attempted murder) to 14 years' imprisonment, though prosecutor Aram Amirzadyan had asked for 12 years. Samvel Harutyunyan, accused of organizing the attempted murder, received 12 years behind bars, while Khachik Poghosyan was sentenced to 14 years in prison for shooting Hayrikyan.
