Family of Soldier Killed in Karabakh Lives in Dilapidated Makeshift Hut

Living for more than a quarter century in crumbling makeshift huts are hundreds of families not on the waiting lists for apartments supplied by the state. According to Shirak Centre NGO [AM], one reason these families are not eligible for compensation from the state is because they didn't lose homes they owned during the 1988 Spitak earthquake. Among them are a dozen or so families that were renting when the earthquake struck. Though many of these families in their places of work were included in the housing waiting lists, their right to receive apartments was not preserved. There is no program to improve the living conditions of families designated as such by the state.

Shirak Centre, a NGO that solicits donations and then buys food, clothing, and other supplies for needy families in Gyumri, produced the following video (in Armenian only) about the severe housing conditions of a family of a soldier reportedly killed by enemy fire in 2009, only 15 days before he was to be discharged.
