HAK Welcomes Efforts of Heritage Party, Dashnaktsutyun, Announces Rallies to Resume

The Armenian National Congress has announced that it will resume its series of rallies on Feb. 17. In a statement issued Thursday, the opposition bloc states the focus of its rallies will be on overthrowing Armenian President Serzh Sargysan and establishing mechanisms to ensure free and fair elections.

“The Armenian National Congress will do everything [possible] through public pressure to give strength to its demands of legislative amendments, which were outlined and made public on Mar. 1, 2010. We are pleased to report that one of the demands included in this document — the issue of conducting parliamentary elections only by a proportional system — is currently also pursued by two parliamentary parties [Heritage Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun)].

“We welcome the efforts of these political forces, holding the Jan. 20 forum with this agenda; we plan to hold a rally on the days this issue is discussed in parliament.

“We call upon forum participants and other political forces that have an interest in forming a legal government through free and fair elections to show their support also in carrying out the other, no less important demands of the platform. The [Armenian National] Congress is inclined toward constructive collaboration and for this reason will support any decision made by the forum favorable to the conduct of fair elections,” reads the statement.
