Opposition Considers Dialogue with Armenian Government Pointless

Armenian National Congress (HAK) representative Levon Zurabyan, who coordinates HAK’s day-to-day affairs, said Tuesday that HAK considers any dialogue with the government to be “meaningless.” Zurabyan was speaking publicly at Liberty Square, where opposition supporters had gathered for the fifth consecutive day since declaring nonstop rallies on Friday.

“Beginning from now, we see the resolution of our problems only through intensifying mass gatherings and mobilization. The interrupted dialogue can resume only upon the initiative of the authorities. If they appeal to us with a request, we will discuss [the matter] and say whether we accept their request or not,” he said.

Recall, the opposition bloc suspended talks with members of President Sargsyan’s governing coalition after the controversial arrest of HAK activist Tigran Araqelayn, who is charged with violence against a representative of the authorities.

In a statement issued Monday, members of the ruling coalition team assigned to negotiate with HAK declared that they will wait till the end of this “illegal gathering” (referring to the tent camp in Liberty Square) before resuming dialogue as tit would be ineffective to do so while HAK “is engaged in illegal activities.”
